Choosing a Catchy Business or Brand Name
Step 1 -- Emphasize Qualities That You Want to Promote
So many times, a business or brand name will reflect absolutely nothing about the crux and held beliefs of the business.
Then, there are companies such as BestBuy, or Burger King for instance, that convey and promote exactly what the business is about, or a quality of that company.
How you get to choosing your business name is not as important as picking a name that epitomizes the qualities in your business that you wish to promote.
Know your new business and its core audience
Before the proper business name is chosen, there are research steps to take in order to create company name ideas, or brand naming ideas. Unless you just 'know' you have a winning business name in mind, it pays to make sure that you, first, know your audience.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What does my audience need?
- Who is my audience?-Mostly men? Mostly women?
- How much money does the majority of my audience make per year?
- How big is my audience?
- What do they look like?
- Who will buy my product or service?
According to All Business Blogger Denise O'Berry-a business consultant with more than 20 years of entrepreneurial, operational and management experience-she regularly discusses successful business naming concepts with new leaders of companies such as large as Verizon and as small as the independently owned corner store.
She writes a weekly small business column, hosts an online small business owner's forum and is called upon regularly by publications such as Entrepreneur, Bank Rate Small Business, Florida Trend, Inc., various newspapers, radio and television to provide expert comments on small business issues.
In a recent post, she describes an encounter with a business owner, who was contemplating creating a new business name. The proprietor in question owns a consignment shop.
- Here's what I told her. Don't try to be all things to all people. Select your name based on your core business, and then you can add peripheral services," commented O'Berry.
- If your core business will be the consignment shop, then you need to laser in on that audience to determine your company name," she wrote.
- Finding the right niche, focusing on it and then adding on the complimentary services will take you a lot further than trying to find a name that fits everything you are trying to do."
Researching and understanding your audience may not be a quick process, but it is a process that allows a better understanding of how to find a good business name-one that will appeal to your current audience, and possibly bring a new audience into the fold.
