Choosing a Catchy Business or Brand Name:

Research a list of business names for other meanings

A stumbling block for many business leaders, in the beginning stages of finding a creative business name, is trying to find a name that is succinct and original, but one that isn't 'way out there.' Better yet, create a business name that doesn't have one or more meanings, depending upon who is reading the name.

If you are considering marketing your business globally, or if you plan to build your business in an area where more than one language is spoken, routinely, it's imperative that you make sure that the selected business name has no other negative meaning in those languages.

Let's say a business wanted to name itself "AHO, Inc.," based on the initials of the principal executives of the company. From the look of the name, it seems innocuous enough, however the businesses main source of business is from Japan.

The word "Aho," in Japanese, means "idiot."

At times, searching for double-meanings for a business name might seem daunting, but it's better to search out meanings of possible business names in the languages and countries that your company plans on doing business, than to risk looking like an "aho."
